2011 Rugby World Cup a huge boost to business

News that New Zealand will host the 2011 Rugby World Cup will put a sizable spring in the step of retailers and businesspeople, according to the head of the country’s premier retail district.

“This is the most exciting news since Peter Blake won the America’s Cup in San Diego 10 years ago,” said Cameron Brewer, general manager of the Newmarket Business Association.

"It has been a pretty rough few months for business, so news of this magnitude is a huge morale boost.

“With business confidence and consumer spending down, and interest rates going up, the businesses community desperately needed something to dampen down the doom and gloom. The NZRFU has delivered the goods.

“I can almost hear the cash registers ringing in anticipation. This will be worth hundreds of millions to the regional economy and at times Auckland City’s population will swell by nearly 20 percent.

“Businesses will welcome all the buzz, hype and genuine excitement with open arms. The Rugby World Cup is going to be good for everyone.”

“While we may never get the Olympics, this is without doubt next best and biggest thing,” said Mr Brewer.
