This Week on Coast
THIS WEEK ON COAST
TONIGHT – 9.00 PM ON MAORI TELEVISION
Live-to-air from Maori Television’s Auckland’s street-front studio, urban music show COAST presents a weekly mix of emerging and established music acts tonight – Thursday, November 17 at 9.00 PM.
Live in the COAST studio is Te Reotakiwa Dunn – aka Reo – hot on the release of his self-titled contemporary Maori music album. Reo (Ngapuhi, Ngai Tuhoe) hails from the Hokianga and won last year’s National Concerto Taonga Puoro (Maori wind instrument) Competition. He sings in reo Maori and his performance will showcase his skills with the guitar and taonga puoro.
Then it’s the exceptional talents of Samoan singer/songwriter Mo ‘Reece. He writes, produces and performs his own original music, and has been involved with the group Soul Paua who were nominated at the 2003 Tui Music Awards. Mo ‘Reece will be in full effect with his smooth R’n’B soul sounds as he develops his repertoire for his upcoming debut album.
Tohu is a bilingual band consisting of guitars, drums and vocals mainly influenced by hip hop, R’n’B and reggae. Tohu celebrates being Maori with their uplifting and energetic music. The band played on COAST earlier this year in the reo Maori special and are back again to show our viewers they play just as well in English!
Finally, The Midnights are seasoned guests on Maori Television and this time, they have real cause for celebration. The six-piece flax roots group is set for the Auckland release of debut EP Hot Country at K Road’s 420 on Friday November 18. Tonight the group performs samplers from the EP – the sound of summer 2006.
Meanwhile, out in the field – all-Maori hip hop group Said escort Taaz around Dunedin; and COAST catches up with dub roots and reggae crew, Rhombus, and contemporary roots trio Seven Suns – both from Wellington.
