Mitre 10 Marae DIY Ends Season with the King of All Make-Overs

The show that helps marae around the country knock out their five and even ten year plans in just a few days, MITRE 10 MARAE DIY, draws to a season close this Sunday November 6 at 8.00 PM with a makeover to rival all makeovers.

After renovating 19 marae around the motu, this week's DIY in Masterton is perhaps the team's most dramatic landscaping project yet. Ngati Hamua has just four days to extend their wharekai, build covered shelters and walkways and convert the cracked concrete on the entire marae atea (front area) into beautifully manicured grounds.

Viewers won't believe the transformation as hosts Nevak Ilolahia (Rongowhakaata, Te Whanau a Apanui, Whakatohea and Tongan) and Te Ori Paki (Tuwharetoa, Tainui, Tuhoe) muck in for a season finale special.

The second series has seen stunning transformations take place in the community marae based at Otaki, Kuku, Taupo, Taranaki, Hokianga and now Masterton. The series has also encompassed tribal history and traditional practices in each episode, not to mention quintessential Maori humour and makeovers for the kuia!

The concept for the series is the brainchild of Rotorua-based Hula Haka Productions and company director Nevak Ilolahia says the close of the second series marks the end of a long labour of love for the company.

“It’s been one big long roller coaster,” she says, “but the thousands of hours our team has spent on pulling it all together has been such an awesome ride. Who else can say that each week they get to share the experience of a hapu watching their marae literally transform before their very eyes?”

“We’d like to send out a big mihi to all the marae and their communities as well as the hundreds of tradespeople and sponsors that made all that possible.”
