The New Zealand Press Association, in a dramatic departure from its traditional role as the national news agency, has launched its photo and graphics arm, NZPA Images, to coincide with the start of Auckland Fashion Week.

Some of the biggest and brightest names in New Zealand fashion kicked off Air New Zealand Fashion Week 2005 yesterday (Tuesday NZT) with catwalk shows that drew packed crowds from around the world.

And for the first time, NZPA photographers were there to capture the rapture, posting more 100 images on the new http: http:www.nzpaimages.co.nz website in the first day alone. NZPA also filed photos and graphics on several breaking news stories of the day.

"NZPA Images is a further step in the progressive upgrading of NZPA's services. In the past few weeks we have recruited professional photographers, begun training staff reporters to illustrate their own stories and a nationwide network of freelance photographers is also contributing to the new photo newswire," said NZPA CEO, Lincoln Gould

NZPA yesterday snapped new collections by Zambesi, and Trelise Cooper, whose previous designs have both been favoured by European fashion followers and the Hollywood elite.

International stylist Cameron Silver -- listed by Time Magazine as one of the 25 most influential people in fashion – said it was clear why these labels had cracked the international market.

"If you are a women who has everything, you probably don't have this," Silver told NZPA after Cooper’s lingerie show yesterday.

NZPA Images offers several exiting new features for image buyers, including a Diary & Alert system that automatically updates by email registered users of new images on the site.

The www.nzpaimages.co.nz website was specifically designed for ease of use, NZPA Commercial Manager Matthew Holdridge says.

``Customers can find the image they want and download it quickly and without fuss.

``At NZPA Images, if you have a busy deadline, you won’t have to waste time navigating a maze of screens and instructions. Once you’ve registered, every visit is a couple of mouse clicks to find the image you want and your away again,’’ Holdridge says.
