Winston gives business a workable result
"Winston Peter's positive confidence and supply support for a Labour-led Government is a better outcome than most businesspeople had braced themselves for," Cameron Brewer, head of the Newmarket Business Association said tonight.
"There was a real fear from the business community that we'd have a minority government dragged further to the left, with an array of small parties wagging the dog. Instead the government has been pulled to the centre and is armed with more stability than election night promised. It is a bittersweet pill for most businesspeople trying to plan for the next three years.
"In Auckland we've had the flattest Spring in recent years. The cash registers have been quiet and business confidence surveys have spelled doom and gloom.
"A potentially stable government propped up by two centrist parties has got to be encouraging news for most investors. The thought of a lame-duck Green-fed government gave no one any confidence. This has got to be the best of a bad bunch of possibilities.
"Business will be pleased that Winston hasn't got any financial responsibilities. In fact some will be encouraged that he'll be overseas quite a bit.
"Winston has delivered business a workable result. For the elderly, Winston is not just the golden card boy but their own New Zealand idol," said Cameron Brewer.
