Super 12 Kapa Haka Showcases on Maori Television
A spectacular showcase of Maori performing arts is screening on Maori Television with the Maori language entertainment extravaganza SUPER 12 KAPA HAKA every Tuesday at 5.15 PM.
The Turanganui-a-Kiwa Kapa Haka Super 12 Festival in Gisborne is an annual competition hosted by Kapa Haka International in late December to provide opportunities for creativity and the development of Maori culture into new spaces.
Twelve teams – each with 12 members – must perform all disciplines of kapa haka within 12 minutes. Participants are encouraged to be as innovative as possible while enhancing the traditional aspects of kapa haka.
Every week, a 15-minute episode of SUPER 12 KAPA HAKA focuses on one kapa haka group.
Kapa Haka International spokesman Willie Te Aho says the family event attracts a total of 144 kapa haka performers from throughout the country as well as several thousand spectators to the Gisborne Soundshell.
Turanga Ararau from Tairawhiti was the overall winner followed by second place-getters Taiwere and Te Roopu Manaia in third – both teams hailing from Te Arawa.
“We are really rapt with the high standard of competition,” Mr Te Aho says, “and are proud to present a top-quality kapa haka forum to enhance and promote Maori performing arts as a unique treasure of Aotearoa.”
