Hyundai ready for alternative fuels
Many of them don’t realise it, but New Zealand Hyundai owners are ready to roll on the government’s moves to alternative fuels.
Every model in the Hyundai range will run perfectly on the additions mooted last month by Minister Pete Hodgson.
Although no final decisions have been made, blends of up to five percent ethanol in petrol and three percent biodiesel in diesel are mooted.
“Every Hyundai will handle the transition to these levels, and greater percentages, without modification and without any effect on reliability short or longterm,” is the assurance from the General Manager of Hyundai Automotive NZ, Philip Eustace.
“Simply, the owner uses the blended fuel in place of the current fuel, and forgets about it.
“We know other brands are not able to handle a switch to alternative fuels, but Hyundai’s existing fleet is ready.
“That of course is excellent future-proofing for current owners: whenever the alternative fuels are introduced, today’s Hyundai vehicles will accept them,” said Mr Eustace.
Hyundai was the first, and is still the only, brand to nail its colours to the mast, successful running a Getz on ethanol blend petrol in last year’s EnergyWise Rally.
Hyundai also proved the excellence of its diesel technology, winning its class with a diesel Terracan SUV and startling observers with the performance of a diesel Getz, not a current New Zealand model.
The South Korean brand is at the forefront of a global push toward new technologies and fuels, committing massive funds to research and development of fuel cell vehicles and other solutions to the world’s looming problems.
A Hyundai zero-emission fuel cell-powered car last month took second place in a leading European rally event. The brand has also committed to a hydrogen recharge station near Los Angeles, California.
