Qantas Sponsors Television Awards
Qantas Airways will sponsor the Television Awards being held later this year by free television broadcasters. The awards will be called the Qantas Television Awards.
Bruce Wallace, Executive Director of the NZ Television Broadcasters Council, said "Qantas has a proud tradition of supporting awards in journalism for over 30 years and we are thrilled they are supporting the new awards".
The Qantas Television Awards represent a first for television in New Zealand. They will be the first awards to recognise excellence in all main genres of television. Including news and current affairs. There will be 31 categories.
Allan Williams, Regional General Manager for Qantas Airways, said that he was "delighted Qantas was involved in what would be Television’s ‘main event’ for the year".
Entries closed for the Awards on Friday 19 August and over 400 entries have been received including over 150 in news and current affairs. Judging is taking place in September and October. The finalists will be announced in mid October.
The winners of the awards will be announced in a gala ceremony on Saturday 12 November to be held in the Auckland Town Hall.
Mr Wallace said that the NZTBC had decided the television broadcast of the awards would be rotated annually around the three members’ channels starting with TV One in 2005.
The NZTBC is made up of the three companies operating national broadcast television channels. They are CanWest TVWorks, Prime Television New Zealand and Television New Zealand.
