National Aluminium dispute continues

Workers at National Aluminium in Hamilton have unanimously rejected a 4.25 per cent pay offer.

Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union national secretary Andrew Little said that the offer was made during mediation yesterday, and was on the condition that it be accepted by today.

“This workforce is seeking a five per cent pay rise, which is the going rate this year,” he said.

“Yesterday, in an effort to settle the dispute, they offered to drop their claim to 4.75 per cent, but the company did not agree. Instead, it offered 4.25 per cent, but said that the offer would be withdrawn if not accepted by today.

“Today our members voted unanimously to reject the offer.”

Mr Little said that an overtime ban was still in place at the plant.
