New Zealand is leading the way with a locally developed global positioning system (GPS) location service.

Called ‘Here I Am’ the technology is unique in that it has been created by combining proprietary software with existing and new hardware technology to provide a new service that sets the benchmark in personal GPS technology.

“We saw a gap in the market that currently offers a fragmented range of GPS devices and services so we’ve designed a fully integrated system,” says Charles Wedd, Here I Am managing director.

The Here I Am GPS locator device relays location and travel data to the Here I Am webserver, where it can be accessed by any internet capable device whether a cellphone, computer or PDA phone in real time. It has a range of uses, including allowing businesses to keep track of fleet vehicles, preventing theft of expensive earthmoving and heavy equipment and for parents to use as a ‘teen driver management tool’ to encourage safer driving behaviour and to reduce the speeds at which young people drive, too often with unfortunate consequences.

“The service has been designed to be easy to use, whether from home or the office via a PC or on the move from a PDA phone or cellphone. Giving customers the information they need, when they need it at their fingertips,” says Mr Wedd. “Customers can set their own perimeters and be advised via email or text message when a vehicle moves out of a defined area or exceeds the speed limit. Our service is available 24/7 with trained staff to help with any queries,” says Mr Wedd.

Here I Am has many unique features compared to similar GPS location services already on the market, including that it’s web-based and ‘real time’ with no special software required, an anti-theft feature allowing the vehicle to be remotely turned off and importantly an effective way of monitoring and reporting on excess speed.

“Here I Am is a cost effective and reliable option of preventing the theft of expensive machinery and other fleet vehicles. The Here I Am service has the potential to save companies thousands of dollars in losses and insurance premiums,” Mr Wedd says.

“It can also be used to effectively manage vehicle fleets for companies such as couriers, pizza delivery and tradesmen, eliminating improper use of vehicles as well as achieving fuel efficiency through better route planning and faster, more efficient deliveries. It also offers business owners peace of mind knowing where their staff and equipment are.”

The in-vehicle units retail for between $948 and $1,349 and then customers pay a monthly charge of between $35 and $60.

Plus as an added benefit for parents they can use the same technology as a ‘teen driver management tool’ to encourage safer driving behaviour and to reduce the speeds at which young people drive, too often with unfortunate consequences.
