Transit roading plan backed by contractors

Transit roading plan backed by contractors

The increase in road funding announced last night by Transit New Zealand has been welcomed by the New Zealand Contractors’ Federation, which has been campaigning for funders to “Get Real” about infrastructure spending levels.

NZCF Chief Executive Richard Michael said the announcement of a committed $968million for roading projects next year, including $330million to be spent in Auckland, would boost the economy by freeing up roading gridlocks.

“We’ve been lobbying hard for funders to “Get Real” about the levels of infrastructure spending and we’re delighted that Government, and Transit, are listening to the voice of reason,” Mr Michael said.

“It’s now crucial that all industry sectors – Transit, local authorities and contractors - co-operate fully to ensure we have the capability to tackle projects as quickly as possible.”

Mr Michael said that unprecedented demand coupled with a national skills shortage meant major infrastructure projects had to be planned in unison between all concerned parties.

“We’ll work with Transit to ensure projects can be delivered on time,” he said.

Mr Michael praised Transit’s 10-year draft national roading plan and encouraged the same level of infrastructure commitment and forward planning for the rail, energy and waterworks industries.

“Growing the New Zealand economy is dependent on us having modern, well-maintained infrastructure – and that goes beyond just roads,” he said.
