Finalists named for NZ Home & Entertaining 2005 Home of the Year Award

Judges’ selection showcases leading-edge, original design From the elegance of an artist’s retreat perched like a dark canvas on a small section in Onehunga to an adventurous King Country home styled on a tramper’s hut, NZ Home & Entertaining magazine today named a provocative final selection for the prestigious NZ Home & Entertaining Home of the Year Award 2005 mixed with Schweppes.

“This year’s finalists are a showcase of leading-edge, original design. They each take a distinctive approach to a brief and challenge the idea of what defines a ‘kiwi’ home.

The styles of the finalists range from internationalist and modernist to uniquely local and individual,” says Claire McCall, Editor of NZ Home & Entertaining and one of three judges of the Award.

NZ Home & Entertaining’s Home of the Year Award was launched in 1996 to celebrate innovation in residential architecture and design. It has recognised a range of outstanding architects and buildings in the ten years since, and has grown to become New Zealand’s premier architecture award.

The finalists for the Award are:

•Nicholas Stevens and Gary Lawson for a one-bedroomed artist’s retreat in Onehunga

•A second entry from Stevens Lawson Architects: a spectacular international style home just outside of Hamilton

•Auckland’s Dave Strachan with a timber holiday home nestled between manuka at Mangawhai Heads

•Mitchell Stout Architects for a rural family home in the King Country, based on a tramper’s hut

•Paul Clarke for a cantilevered concrete-and-glass pavilion-like holiday home in Wanaka

“The different styles will make it challenging to pick a winner, but the final selection represents the best of the best. They’re an impressive comment on the vitality and diversity of New Zealand architecture and design,” says Ms. McCall.

Award-winning architects Pete Bossley and Jon Craig will join Ms. McCall as judges to decide the winner of the Award. The winner will be announced at a red-carpet function on July 27, and will receive a cash prize of $15,000. Details of the winner and finalists will be published in the August/September issue of NZ Home & Entertaining, on sale July 28.
