Exclusive guests indulge in NZ salmon
It's probably among the most exclusive audiences any New Zealand food company has had to cater for.
But Regal Marlborough Salmon's presence in the New Zealand pavilion at the 2005 World Expo in Japan is still flying the flag for our fresh, clean image.
And with its produce being served to some of the most important guests at the Expo, the country's premium salmon supplier is enjoying a high profile at the massive event.
Based on the theme Nature's Wisdom, the 2005 Expo opened only just over a month ago but already more than 2.5 million people have come through the gates - an average of 70,000 a day.
And the New Zealand pavilion is punching above its weight - some days it has been getting 20,000 visitors.
Invited and VIP guests at the New Zealand pavilion are being served five, six or seven small, elegant samples of our country's tastiest morsels - and Regal Marlborough Salmon is sitting centre plate.
Official caterer to the New Zealand pavilion is Ruth Pretty Catering from the Kapiti Coast and every two weeks the company ships produce from New Zealand especially for the Expo.
The rich, full flavour of Regal Marlborough Salmon is being served as part of a 'taste New Zealand' experience aligned with our pavilion's theme of New, Sea, Land and People.
New Zealand King Salmon marketing manager Stephen Gibson says feedback from the site on the company's products has been excellent.
"Regal Marlborough salmon forms the crown of the plate that's served to all visitors in the VIP room at the New Zealand pavilion," Mr Gibson says.
"Ruth Pretty says they have been serving Regal Marlborough cold smoked salmon with wasabi cream and it has been one of the most popular and well received delicacies on their tasting plates."
Ms Pretty says the Japanese simply love the New Zealand cuisine.
"We are one of the few countries to provide a lot of different tastes in a style the Japanese appreciate. We wanted everything to taste like New Zealand food but in a manner the Japanese palate appreciates.
"It must be working; they absolutely love it."
Even though the caterer is serving no more than about 100 portions a day, the audience is exclusive, Ms Pretty says.
"These are very influential people - Japanese dignitaries, sponsors, guests of Tourism New Zealand and Trade and Enterprise, exporters and distributors and, of course, New Zealand visitors. It's important to serve them the best that New Zealand can provide."
Regal Marlborough Salmon is harvested from the pristine waters of New Zealand's Marlborough Sounds and has a rich, full flavour marked by distinctive deep red-orange flesh.
It is one of the best sources of Omega-3 essential fatty acids which are essential to life and good health and can help to maintain a healthy heart.
A total of 122 countries from Asia, Europe, The Americas, Oceania and South East Asia are exhibiting at the 2005 World Expo.
New Zealand's national day at the event is scheduled for June 3 with the Prime Minister in attendance.
