Sleepyhead strike to continue
Workers from the Sleepyhead beds factory in Auckland have voted to continue their strike into Monday.
Some 180 workers walked off the job today (Friday) in support of their claim for a fair-share pay rise of 5%. The workers picketed the factory in Great South Road, Otahuhu, this morning and were overwhelmed by the public support they received.
EPMU national secretary Andrew Little said that the workers were determined to lift their pay rates which averaged $12 an hour.
“Sleepyhead is a highly profitable company and these workers should be able to earn a decent wage”, Mr Little said.
The strike was to last for just one day, but the workers decided to continue until at least the end of Monday.
They are also seeking time-and-a-half payments for working overtime.
