Getz drops gear, lifts power
Hyundai has boosted the performance of New Zealand’s most popular little car, the Getz.
After feedback in New Zealand, the gearing has been lowered slightly on the GLS 1.5-litre model to further enliven the
manual driving experience by quickening through-the-gears acceleration.
It also sharpens top gear cruising response with no change to the Getz’ excellent fuel economy.
The model's former 3.65:1 final drive or differential gear ratio has been changed to 3.842:1.
The Getz was originally geared more for its major target of Europe where freeway/tollway speed limits are higher than
and petrol costs relatively more.
Upstream of the altered gearing, the sprightly performance of the Getz comes via its 1.5-litre, twin-cam 16-valve
engine, which peaks at a healthy 74kW of power at 5800rpm and 133Nm of torque at 3200rpm.
The remarkable little Getz is also one of the safest cars in its class. Most recent results through from the world’s
most respected test centre, the Euro NCAP, give Getz a four-star rating for front and side impact, and also for child
protection.
New Zealanders are clearly impressed. Getz outsold every other car in the Micro and Light sector in 2004, as part of
Hyundai’s enormous 75 percent sales growth in this country last year.
Getz is one of the models that has propelled Hyundai’s worldwide recognition as a mass-market leader in safety
initiatives, focused on reliability and quality as well as value.
