MPA Magazine of the Year Awards Show Depth of Talent and Strong Market

The best of the best in New Zealand ’s magazine industry have been celebrated in the Magazine Publisher Association’s (MPA) Magazine of the Year Awards announced in Auckland tonight .

MPA Executive Director John McClintock said a record number of entries and categories for this year’s awards highlights the impressive strength of the magazine market in New Zealand .

“We expanded the awards to cover 52 categories across ten main award groups this year and achieved a superb response rate with 241 entries,” says Mr McClintock. “It’s a reflection of the tremendous breadth and quality of magazines we have in New Zealand .

“Magazine readership has grown in recent years to 91 percent of New Zealanders, its highest level ever, which demonstrates that our magazine publishers are attracting millions of devoted readers.”

Taking the top honours were New Zealand Listener, which won the Supreme Winner of Magazine of the Year, and Your Home & Garden and New Zealand Home & Entertaining Editor Claire McCall, who was named Supreme Winner of Editor of the Year.

“New Zealand Listener is a cultural institution that continues to lead its news and current affairs sector week after week. The judges described the magazine as a spirited sexagenarian with a new look and plenty of good ideas, and I couldn’t agree more,” says Mr McClintock.

“Supreme Winner Editor of the Year, Claire McCall, does the difficult job of editing two magazines with different positioning incredibly well. She brings huge energy and tremendous skill to her role.”

“The calibre of all of this year’s finalists and category winners was exceptional. There is a great depth of talent in the magazine industry that bodes well for the future.

“The most successful magazines are those where journalists, designers and sales teams work together to create and deliver a great product – the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. We saw a great deal of evidence of this in this year’s MPA Magazine of the Year Awards,” says Mr McClintock.

Judging the awards were leaders in creative design, content and publishing. They are Basil Christensen, Damon O’Leary, Billy McQueen and Lorenz Perry from Saatchi & Saatchi; Nigel Keats from Clemenger BBDO; Julie Dalzell, Nene King, Mike Hutcheson, Irene Gardiner, Gavin Ellis, Hugh Stringleman and Heather Albrecht.

The awards were presented at 7.30pm , Friday 8 April, at the Hyatt Regency, Auckland .

About the Magazine Publishers Association

The MPA exists to foster and maintain high standards in magazine publishing – to ensure that readers, advertisers and publishers continue to benefit from the unique relationship that exists between them.

MPA members must audit all their publications on a regular basis to verify their circulation figures. These figures tell advertisers how many copies of a particular magazine are bought or distributed free of charge – and help advertisers quantify the potential reach of their advertisement, as do readership figures.

The MPA assists the magazine publishing industry by acting as a vanguard for professional standards, and by providing its members with a range of membership services.

As the national organisation for magazine publishing, the MPA is the industry’s interface with other associated organisations concerned with magazine publishing.
