Mother's Day - Growing Tradition For Generation Y
Mother's Day - A Growing Tradition For Generation Y
Celebrating mums is an important part of New Zealand life according to a survey of young Kiwis released today.
The survey conducted by Visa International shows the majority (82 percent) of young adults aged between 20 to 30 years will be thanking their mother with a gift for Mother's Day on May 8, with almost 80 percent thinking it is the perfect time to say thanks.
Mums around the country should be prepared to be pretty "chuffed" with their gifts, as more than half the respondents plan to spend in excess of $25.
"While the majority of generation Y think Mother's Day is the perfect time to say thanks to their mum, breakfast in bed is simply no longer a viable option for busy adults," says Iain Jamieson, New Zealand Country Manager Visa International.
On the flipside, the survey showed only 13 percent of young adults knew when Mother's Day is, and nearly half said they wouldn't be seeing their mother on the day.
"Most people told us the ideal gift for their mother would be pampering, holidays and a bit of 'me time'. A weekend away and relaxing days at health spas were common themes of what people would love to get their mums," says Mr Jamieson.
To help people reward and recognise their mothers, Visa is running an Ultimate Thank You competition, with a week of luxury and shopping in Paris the prize for the winning mum and a companion.
To have a chance at winning this luxury prize for two, sons and daughters just need to log on to www.visamum.co.nz, and share why their mum deserves the Ultimate Thank You this Mother's Day.
TV3's Mike McRoberts and Hillary Barry along with Nicky Pellegrino, editor of the New Zealand Woman's Weekly, will judge the competition.
Nicky Pellegrino says the search for the ultimate Kiwi mum is about reminding busy people to sit back and think about the wonderful things their mothers did for them - from ensuring there were always plenty of Weetbix in the cupboard to the extraordinary sacrifices or challenges.
"Unfortunately as our lives get busier it just becomes too easy to forget to remind our mums how much we appreciate them," says Nicky. "We want to hear about how your mother helped you to get where you are today, so we can reward them with the ultimate holiday."
