Genesis Energy targets more gas customers
Genesis Energy today reiterated the message that the country is not running out of gas for home use with a new marketing
campaign aimed at increasing its gas customer base.
Genesis Energy General Manager Retail, Vince Hawksworth, said the company has plenty of gas for its household customers.
“There seems to be a general perception that gas is running out, and some customers were concerned about investing in
new gas appliances or choosing gas for their new homes. We’re saying very clearly that we have loads of gas for home use
and this will continue to be the case for a long time to come,” he said.
The much publicised final determination of reserves in the Maui gas field impacts electricity generation, which accounts
for 47% of New Zealand’s gas, and industrial users. Only four per cent of New Zealand’s natural gas is used by
residential and commercial customers.
Mr Hawksworth said gas provided several benefits over electricity. He said natural gas made a lot of sense for home
heating, cooking and domestic hot water.
“It’s far more efficient piping gas to homes for water heating, room heating and cooking than using generated
electricity to heat water and homes.”
The company has 116,000 gas customers and is encouraging more customers to use gas through an integrated campaign
including a television commercial, newspaper advertising, billboards and a direct mail communication to Genesis Energy
electricity customers located near a gas pipeline.
Genesis Energy is a partner is the development of the Kupe oil and gas field and is testing and analysing the Cardiff-2
gas prospect in Taranaki to ensure commercial, industrial and residential customers have plentiful gas for years to
