New Face For Nightline

TV3’s highly successful, late-night news programme Nightline welcomes a fresh new face tonight [Monday, March 14th] when former 3 News reporter Carly Kirkwood takes over as the show’s presenter.

An experienced journalist, Carly comes to Nightline with over a decade’s experience working across both television and radio, including several stints with TV3, the first when she was just 16 years old.

“When I was 16 I was a work experience student at TV3 where I worked with Hilary Barry and from that moment on I knew I wanted to be a TV reporter,” says Carly.

“Hilary was an amazing role model for me and I still can’t quite believe that over a decade later I’m following in her footsteps and taking on my own presenting role.”

After finding out about her appointment last week, Carly says she is slightly nervous about filling the shoes of long-time Nightline presenter Carolyn Robinson, but she is looking forward to the challenge and is itching to get into her new seat.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for me to become the presenter of one of TV3’s most successful news shows and I intend on giving the job everything I’ve got.”

“Ever since I did my first journalism work experience with TV3 and even after working around New Zealand and the world, I always knew I wanted to be a TV3 girl. I love the network and have really enjoyed my time reporting for 3 News.” “Of course I’m also delighted to be working alongside Hilary Barry again who was one of the first to congratulate me on my new role, and I’m hoping she can help me out with a few tips in case I get nervous!”

As well as presenting Nightline, Carly will also do some reporting for the show and says she is delighted to still have the opportunity to get out into the field and continue her passion for first-hand journalism.

3’s Director of News and Current Affairs, Mark Jennings, says the decision to appoint Carly as Nightline’s new host was made after careful consideration.

“Carly is a natural,” says Jennings. “She continues the tradition of journalists stepping into anchor roles at TV3 and I’m sure she will gain the respect of the Nightline audience very quickly.”

Born and raised in Taupo, Carly studied media arts in the Waikato where she majored in journalism. She began her career in print journalism for the Herald community group newspapers before working for Counties Manukau radio station then reporting, presenting and producing for Prime TV’s Waikato and Bay of Plenty regional news.

Carly has also travelled extensively, enjoying a stint living and working in Dublin where she worked for local radio station Newstalk 106 as well as ‘You’re A Star’, a UK pop star programme, before returning to New Zealand where she has been a reporter for 3 News for the past two years.
