EMA’s role on wage setting to provide an advocate

Though opposed to multi employer collective agreements (MECA’s), the Employers & Manufacturers Association (Northern) says that that has nothing to do with the present wage negotiations with the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union.

“Except where an industry willingly agrees, EMA is opposed to MECA’s because a ‘one size fits all’ approach to the setting of salaries and wages doesn’t generally work,” said Alasdair Thompson, EMA’s chief executive.

“One agreement for all industry didn’t work in the past and it certainly won’t work now in our intensely competitive market. The performance and circumstances of individual businesses vary enormously.

“But EMA’s position on MECA’s has nothing to do with the present wage negotiations with the Engineers Union.

“For them EMA is simply providing an advocate on behalf of the employers involved.”
