Urban Design Protocol: An important step towards quality urban development

The Property Council of New Zealand (PCNZ) today expressed support for the Urban Design Protocol, launched by the Prince of Wales, and the Minister for the Environment and Urban Affairs.

National Director of the PCNZ, Connal Townsend said the new Urban Design Protocol was an important step towards raising the standard of urban development in New Zealand.

“The vast majority of New Zealanders live in urban centres throughout the country. It is essential that urban centres are well planned, developed and maintained. The Urban Design Protocol is based on the principle that the development fits into the context and character of an existing area, which is precisely what quality urban development is all about.

“The Property Council recognises that modern urban centres will only grow and prosper if urban buildings, including multi-use spaces, are sustainable, pleasant to visit and work in, and reflect best building practice.

These characteristics are key outcomes of the Urban Design Protocol,” Mr Townsend said.
