Conservation through Co-operation Showcased

The Southern Seabird Solutions Trust is a shining example of what can be achieved through co-operation, innovation and commitment to achieving a shared goal of promoting seabird smart fishing practices, New Zealand Seafood Industry Council CEO, Owen Symmans said in celebrating the launch of the new interactive display at Taiaroa Head Royal Albatross Centre.

“Southern Seabirds Solutions represents an innovative approach to seabird conservation. It’s a co-operative model that brings together the seafood industry, fishers, environmentalists and governments to work towards the common goal of encouraging seabird smart fishing practices,” Mr Symmans said. “The progress that has been made is heartening and as an industry, we are proud sponsors, supporters and enthusiastic participants in devising new practices that are seabird friendly and mitigate the incidence of seabird mortality.

“The industry as a whole is committed to ongoing innovation in implementing sustainable practices. No fisherman wants to catch seabirds and there is a huge willingness to change practices, introduce new techniques and technology and adopt new codes which will reduce seabird by-catch.”

Mr Symmans said the opening of the Taiaroa Heads Royal Albatross Centre display by HRH, the Prince of Wales would highlight to New Zealanders - and the world - what could be achieved through co-operation and innovation to change old habits and implement fresh and environmentally sustainable solutions that mitigated the impact of man on the ocean habitat.
