Ten work stoppages ended in the September 2004 quarter, according to latest figures from Statistics New Zealand. The stoppages, consisting of eight complete strikes and two partial strikes, involved 1,061 employees and resulted in the loss of an estimated $475,000 in wages and salaries. Seven work stoppages ended in the preceding quarter.
For the year ending September 2004, 36 work stoppages involving 5,774 employees were recorded. The stoppages resulted in the loss of 6,460 person-days of work and an estimated $1.1 million in wages and salaries. The manufacturing industry contributed 13 of the 36 work stoppages, had the highest number of workers involved, and the highest estimated loss in wages and salaries. There were six work stoppages in health and community services, and five in education.
Twenty-one of the work stoppages recorded in the year ending September 2004 were in the private sector and 15 were in the public sector. The public sector had more employees involved in stoppages, than the private sector, and a greater loss in wages and salaries. There was one ongoing stoppage at the end of the September 2004 quarter.
