One Meat & Wool New Zealand electorate to be contested

Southern South Island Director Jeff Grant and Eastern North Island Director Mike Petersen have been elected unopposed to the Meat & Wool New Zealand Board for a further term of three years, after nominations for three electoral districts closed yesterday.

Only one position on the Board will be contested in the March 2 election, the position of Western North Island Director.

Two nominations have been received for that electoral district. They are Jeremy Austin of Wanganui and Tony Brennan of Hunterville. Jeremy Austin is the current Director for Western North Island.

Jeff Grant, of Gore, was an original Director of Meat & Wool New Zealand at its establishment on July 1 2003, and was first elected its chairman on May 5 2004. He was elected to the New Zealand Meat Board in 1994 and elected chairman in 2000.

Mike Petersen, of Waipukurau, was also an original Director of Meat & Wool New Zealand, having previously been elected Chairman of Sheepco; the organisation that promoted the continuation of a wool levy after the disestablishment of the Wool Board.

Returning Officer Warren Lampp of electionz.com said the election for the Western North Island electoral district would be conducted by postal and internet ballot, with voting papers, and further information about the candidates, to be sent to registered electors on February 4.

Election Day is Wednesday March 2, and only registered electors can vote.

Mr Lampp said voter registration forms could be obtained by calling the Election Hotline. The deadline for their return was 5pm on Tuesday February 1.
