Unbundled Data Service Available Now

Telecom’s competitors and their business customers can get on with using data services on Telecom’s network following the Commerce Commission’s decision that the service meets its expectations.

In its report on local loop unbundling, the Commission indicated that it saw significant merit in Telecom’s commercial offering of an Unbundled Partial Circuits (UPC) service. It said it would monitor the implementation of the UPC and if satisfied would not see the need for regulation.

The UPC is a “data tail,” or end of a data circuit, that lets other carriers provide a data service to customers beyond the reach of their own networks. It is particularly designed for serving the needs of large customers with extensive data requirements.

Telecom has worked with the Commission and wholesale customers in developing its service and prices to be offered.

The Commission has now said it is satisfied that the commercial offering by Telecom meets its expectations, and that the price reflects cost-based prices based on overseas benchmarks.

“We are very pleased to have reached a satisfactory conclusion with the Commerce Commission on this issue,” Telecom General Manager Government & Industry Relations Bruce Parkes said.

“We see this as a very good example of Telecom, the industry and the Commission constructively working together to deliver a result that does not rely on formal regulation”

The UPC service is available immediately.
