New vehicle sales continue the momentum

New vehicle sales continue the momentum

September was yet another month in which new vehicle sales continued to forge ahead of the same month the previous year. New car registrations, at 7006, in fact represented the best September since 1988, and 2219 new commercial vehicle sales produced the strongest September for twenty years.

Total new vehicle sales for September were 17% ahead of August and 3% ahead of September 2003, whilst on a year to date basis new vehicle sales are running 7.1% ahead of the same time last year. 2004 has already surpassed the full year totals for each of 1998 and 1999, with three months of the year still to go.

“All segments of the new vehicle market are humming,” said Perry Kerr, CEO of the Motor Industry Association, “and it’s particularly encouraging to see the continuing strength of both the commercial vehicle and rental sectors, indicating that crucial drivers of the economy are still in very confident mode.”

Toyota continues to hold onto year to date leadership, despite being narrowly beaten in September by Holden and Ford. Commodore has built a seemingly insurmountable lead over Falcon for the title of top selling car model for 2004.
