Major Dairy Farmer Census Underway
The Fonterra Shareholders’ Council and Dairy InSight have combined to commission a major census of all New Zealand dairy farmers. The national census, which is being carried out by independent research company Colmar Brunton, is now available for farmers to complete.
The aim of the census is to provide a complete picture of the industry and an understanding of the differing expectations and aspirations of dairy farmers throughout the country.
The census questionnaire will canvass farmer views on all aspects of dairying. Farmers will be asked their opinions on issues including payout, managing milk production and their attitudes towards their future in the dairy industry. Fonterra farmers will also be asked about the company’s capital structure, which is currently being reviewed.
Shareholders’ Council chairman John Monaghan said: “This census will give us a thorough understanding of the views and opinions of the dairy industry’s entire supplier base so the results will be enormously valuable. This information will help the Shareholders’ Council to more accurately represent farmer views.
“The census results will also be used in the formulation of future policies that will impact on their farming business so it’s really important that all dairy farmers take this opportunity to provide their feedback.” Dairy InSight chief executive Peter Bodeker said: “Dairy InSight is thrilled to be able to work with the Shareholders’ Council to undertake this significant census. It is vital for Dairy InSight to know what our members needs are and the census will go a long way towards keeping us informed.
“Farmers not supplying Fonterra will be asked to complete the Dairy InSight specific questions.”
In a move to simplify data collection, the census is available to be completed electronically. Farmers can also request a hard copy to complete.
