Kiwibank has begun installing its own network of automated teller machines (ATMs). The first machine is located in central Wellington and became operational on Friday.
Kiwibank Chief Executive Sam Knowles said the full network of 300 machines in place by April next year. It is planned to have at least 30 operating by the end of next month.
Mr Knowles said the machines would be located in both high volume metropolitan areas, but also in city suburbs and provincial areas that are presently poorly served.
"This is an important step in developing Kiwibank as a full service alternative to the existing foreign-owned banks. We offer savings accounts, loans, transaction accounts, a low-cost credit card and now our own ATMs."
Kiwibank customers will still be able to use their bank cards at all other main bank ATMs. The other bank's cards will also be able to be used at the Kiwibank machines.
The Kiwibank ATMs will operate 24 hours a day and will offer access to transaction, savings and credit card accounts. The standard 50 cents an ATM transaction charge for Kiwibank customer will apply at all machines. Account holders with other banks are also be able to use the machines.
