Sunday Star-Times Leads Way At Qantas Awards

Sunday Star-Times Leads the Way for Fairfax at Qantas Media Awards

The judges at the Qantas Media Awards agreed that “Sundays are Better than Others” when they named the Sunday Star-Times Newspaper of the Year at the awards ceremony in Auckland tonight.

It was one of 38 awards won by Fairfax newspapers at the industry’s equivalent of the Oscars.

The Sunday Star-Times won another six awards, while the Dominion Post won 11 awards and The Press picked up 10. Further awards were shared among the Sunday News, Daily News, Manawatu Standard, Marlborough Express, Timaru Herald and Southland Times.

Brian Evans, chief executive officer Fairfax New Zealand called it an outstanding result and a tribute to the skill and dedication of the Fairfax people at the various newspapers. “The Sunday Star-Times winning the coveted Newspaper of the Year topped off a great night for the company and showed that our newspapers both nationally and regionally really understand their readers and the cities and communities they serve.”

Judges praised the Sunday Star-Times for its focus on content in all sections and the clean, easy to read presentation of that content. They were particularly impressed with Fairfax’s ability to capture a younger readership without alienating the older audience and described it as altogether an excellent product and a worthy winner. Sunday Star-Times editor Cate Brett credits the result to the outstanding work of the team at the paper and the readers of the Sunday Star-Times.

“We have a very talented group of people at the paper who every week work incredibly hard to put together a quality publication people want to read.

“It is also a big thank you to our readers who have made the Sunday Star-Times an essential part of their weekly reading which is reflected in our increased readership and circulation figures.”
