General Manager Manawatu Standard
Paul Elenio, who has a wide background in the newspaper industry, has been appointed General Manager of the Manawatu Standard, Fairfax NZ Chief Executive Officer Brian Evans announced today.
Mr Elenio, a long-time journalist and a former advertising manager, will succeed Mike Helleur who is taking up a position as General Manager of Property Brokers Ltd.
Mr Elenio said he was looking forward to taking up the role on June 14. His first priority is to work with the staff to build on the impressive gains the newspaper has made in improving the quality and coverage of its editorial content and the pleasing progress made in circulation numbers and advertising volumes.
“The Manawatu Standard is a first-class provincial newspaper which in recent times has more strongly linked itself to the Palmerston North and provincial community that it has served so well for so long,” Mr Elenio said.
“We will work to cement the relationship with readers and with the business community and aim to capitalise on the enormous potential that exists in this progressive region.”
Mr Evans said appointing an internal candidate of Mr Elenio’s breadth of experience and knowledge was a benefit to the newspaper and its staff. The appointment reflected Fairfax’s strong commitment to the paper and the region.
Fairfax Central Region General Manager Don Churchill said with plans being drawn up to sell the existing property in The Square and move to better premises, Mr Elenio’s previous exposure to building project management will be an advantage.
Mr Elenio worked for almost 25 years on Wellington’s daily, The Evening Post, rising to the position of Deputy Editor. He then served for three years as Deputy Advertising and Circulation Manager of Wellington Newspapers, followed by periods as Operations Manager and Assistant General Manager.
For the past six months Mr Elenio has been working in a project management role in Fairfax New Zealand’s head office in Wellington.
Mr Elenio is married with two children.
