Wellington Bypass Decision Welcomed
Transfund’s decision to approve funding for Wellington’s Inner City Bypass shows that common sense must finally prevail, the Automobile Association says.
“The bypass has been through more planning and review cycles over the past 25 years than anyone might expect for a 700m road. It is therefore pleasing that Transfund has decided to finally provide the funding to begin construction.” AA Public Affairs Director George Fairbairn said.
Mr Fairbairn said the bypass would mean traffic going to and from Wellington’s eastern and southern suburbs could avoid the city’s busy retail area providing better access to the airport and hospital for the rest of the region.
“Concerns over heritage buildings, and access for those living in the Aro Valley have been carefully considered and the final plan provides a solution that will benefit almost everyone” he said.
The Automobile Association congratulated Transit, the Wellington Regional Council, the Wellington City Council, the Historic Places Trust and Transfund for their work and commitment to finding the best available solution for the majority of Wellingtonians.
