Orion Launches Healthcare Project In Canada

Orion Systems Launches Major Healthcare Project In Canada

From today, more than a million Canadians are getting better health care thanks to New Zealand innovation.

New Zealand’s largest healthcare software company, Orion Systems International, has provided key technology and expertise for Canada’s first region-wide Electronic Health Record system, netCARE.

netCARE has been built for Capital Health, the public health provider to Edmonton and its surrounding regions in the province of Alberta.

“Using Orion’s Concerto™ Medical Applications Portal, 8500 medical staff will be able to access complete patient records for more than a million people in Edmonton,” says Ian McCrae, Orion’s CEO.

Concerto™ brings all information about a patient into one place, including laboratory results, transcribed clinical reports and patient and caregiver contact details. By connecting the separate “islands” of information across the Capital Health region, netCARE improves the quality and safety of care, and makes better use of limited resources.

“Our involvement in netCARE shows the very high quality of our healthcare information technology innovation in New Zealand. This is a superb example of how technology originally developed for the New Zealand healthcare system is finding markets worldwide,” said Mr McCrae.

Speaking at the launch via video, Health Minister Annette King said she was pleased to note the contribution of New Zealanders and a New Zealand company in the success of this pioneering Canadian project.

”Orion Systems International is an outstanding example of a kiwi company taking solutions developed for the New Zealand healthcare environment, and delivering them to healthcare providers throughout the world. They are making a positive difference to the experiences of patients and clinicians worldwide,” said Ms King.
“New Zealand Trade and Enterprise has identified health care information technology as a sector with great opportunities for export growth, and Orion is leading the way in this area,” says Ian McCrae.

“We’re doing this in part with the support of international investors and partners such as Andrew Clements, who is assisting us to reach larger markets and compete on a truly international scale.”

“Orion is achieving substantial export growth, and netCARE is another major step in our plans. netCARE’s investment in Orion is paying dividends not only for New Zealand, but also for our partners.”

netCARE has been built by a consortium of Oracle Corporation, Hewlett-Packard, Sierra Systems, Quovadx Inc and Orion Systems International.

Concerto™ was designed in New Zealand and the experience using Concerto™ in the New Zealand health system has been a key factor in its development into an internationally successful product. Concerto™ is now in use, or being installed at seven District Health Boards throughout the country. Thirty hospitals around the world use Concerto™ as their primary point of access to electronic patient data.
