Great opportunity for meat exports to China
China FTA: Great opportunity for meat and wool exports to China
Meat & Wool New Zealand today welcomed the Government’s announcement that a study into a possible Free Trade Agreement between New Zealand and China is to be launched.
Meat & Wool New Zealand Director Jeff Grant says the study, along with the finalised Trade and Economic Cooperation Framework is a great opportunity to explore what possibilities exist to increase market access for New Zealand meat and wool industries into China.
“China is a large and diverse market for the meat and wool industries and is likely to grow substantially in the next few years. This study should highlight the benefit to New Zealand of a Free Trade Agreement with China.”
“Meat & Wool New Zealand welcomes this framework as it will provide us with a good foundation for the future development of a strong and rapidly developing trade and economic relationship between China and New Zealand. Last year alone New Zealand meat exports to China last year were worth around $130 million, and wool exports were worth $150 million.”
Meat & Wool New Zealand director Mike Petersen says today’s announcement is a big step forward for New Zealand wool exporters and producers.
“China is the biggest market for New Zealand wool, and this study and framework provides a big opportunity for New Zealand wool producers.”
“We expect to be a key player in any Free Trade negotiations that may result from both the study and framework, and look forward to working with the Government and other industries in developing New Zealand’s negotiating position.”
