Mood of the Boardroom

Results from the first major survey of business in 2004 - the 'Mood of the Boardroom' - will be unveiled at functions in Auckland and Wellington on Thursday and Friday. The NZ Herald 'Mood of the Boardroom' survey has traditionally captured views from chief executives of the top 200 companies in New Zealand. This year Business NZ has also conducted a parallel survey through its four Regional Associations* - of chief executives of small and medium-sized businesses and not-for-profit organisations.

The research explores differences in attitude among smaller and larger businesses and elicits views on tax, infrastructure, employment law, compliance costs, trade and foreign policy.

Business NZ Chief Executive Simon Carlaw says a key question asked by the survey was: "Does New Zealand have a growth strategy to sustain business success?"

"This is a fundamental issue," Mr Carlaw said. "If business itself does not have confidence that the country is positioned to encourage and accelerate growth, the prospect of growing companies, goods, services and exports becomes that much harder."

Mr Carlaw said he welcomed the wide-ranging commentaries from all sectors of business recorded by the surveys. "The research confirms that business advocacy is well aligned with actual business views, while delivering depth of insight into the key business issues of today."
