Ports of Auckland Volumes Index Update
Total container volumes* were up 4% to 663,506 TEUs for the 12 months to end-February 2004 (as compared to the 12 months to end-February 2003) and down 3% on February 2003.
Full import and full export container volumes increased 4% and 2% respectively for the 12 months to end-February 2004. For the month of February 2004, full import and full export container volumes were down 6% and 4% respectively on February 2003. This reduction is mainly due to the loss of a trade to a competing port.
Transhipment** volumes were up 17% for the month of February and up 4% for the 12 months to end-February 2004.
Containers comprise approximately 70% of Ports of Auckland’s throughput and about 85% of business activity.
Breakbulk (non-containerised) volumes were up 3% to 4.5 million tonnes for the 12 months to end-February 2004. February volumes were down 21% on February 2003.
* Container volumes are measured in TEUs (20-foot equivalent units – or the size of a standard 20-foot container).
** Transhipment containers
are discharged at Auckland and reshipped on another vessel
to international or other New Zealand destinations.
