Earl Hagaman, Scenic Circle Hotels Chairman, has announced Scenic Circle Hotels are enjoying another record year in
sales and guest numbers, which are up approximately 15% up over the last year.
"The numbers of tourists in conducted tour groups, FIT Travellers and corporates is up dramatically. The conference
business is also booming. Scenic Circle Hotels revenues are exceeding the prior year in spite of the very strong Kiwi
dollar.
"Scenic's new $15 million Dunedin City Hotel will open 1 March 2004 and with some additional floors to be completed in
the next few months will ultimately include 124 rooms. This hotel will complement Scenic's 178 room and Conference
Centre, Southern Cross Hotel and Dunedin Casino, which are already in operation.
"Scenic's new Kaikoura Hotel which has been unit titled has begun unit sales which have been met by a receptive market.
"Unfortunately, bureaucratic Resource Consent requirements have delayed commencement of construction of this beautiful
Scenic Circle Hotel and Conference Complex over three years. Construction is now under way.
"The demand for a high quality hotel and conference centre in Kaikoura by tour operators, FITs and travellers in general
is unprecedented both because of the spectacular Kaikoura mountain backdrop and fantastic sea coast views and because
the whales which reside there the year round can be seen from boats only a few metres away. It has been decades since
any other hotel has been built in Kaikoura and should anyone attempt to do so now the bureaucratic land mines would
delay completion for many years.
