Wellington Protest against Industrial Apartheid
10 Feburary, outside of Parliament at 12.15 pm (this is the day Parliament opens for the year).
NUPE (National Union of Public Employees) is currently running a campaign against Industrial Apartheid, that is the
desire by some employers to discriminate against staff who decide to join NUPE instead of what appears to be the
employer's preferred union.
There are a number of reasons that people join NUPE: Some are sick of the compromising that occurs between and within
some employee organisations, NUPE has an unusually high ratio of organisers to members of 1:500; NUPE does not have big
overheads as we do not pay organisers high salaries or run a fleet of cars and consequently we have the resources to run
personal cases at no extra cost to members.
NUPE has consistently stated that whilst we do not subscribe to a policy of "partnership" with the employer, we are
willing to co-operate on matters of mutual interest, but not at the expense of compromising our members' interests.
It is our view that it is in every employee's interest to belong to a union. It should be their choice whether they do
and their choice which union they join, if any. NUPE is one alternative and members should not suffer if they choose
that alternative
