One of the great rugby nations has turned to Canterbury International to provide its apparel.
The South African Rugby Football Union (SARFU) has entered into a six-year sponsorship deal with Canterbury, starting on July 1. The partnership, a mix of cash, product and marketing support, encompasses the Springboks, Springbok Sevens, National Under-21 and U-19 teams and the National Women's team.
Canterbury's recent involvement in South African rugby has been as apparel provider for the Bulls and Sharks Super 12 teams, but the company has outfitted the Springboks in the past.
Canterbury Managing Director Bruce Cotterill said South Africa was one of the great rugby powers and he was happy to see them back in Canterbury gear.
"As a brand that has rugby at its core, it makes perfect sense for Canterbury to align itself with South African rugby and the Springboks," Mr Cotterill said. "We're sure we can provide a competitive edge to South African Rugby through our technical expertise and strong track record in the sport."
Canterbury, which celebrates its centenary in 2004, also provides apparel for five other countries - Australia, Ireland, Scotland, Fiji and Japan.
SARFU President Brian van Rooyen commended Canterbury for its commitment to the future of South African rugby and promised to perform well on the field in return.
"Canterbury will be making a significant investment in our game over the next six years and it is vital that we are able to offer them the value that they deserve," van Rooyen said.
"We have
already seen some notable successes from our other
representative teams and we aim to rekindle the proud
heritage of the Springboks. This will provide us with a
stable platform from which to go forward in our quest to be
amongst the top three in the world."
