Unionists Meet to Back TSB Staff Negotiations

Members from a range of trade unions are to gather in New Plymouth tonight to support union members at TSB bank who have waited 12 years for the opportunity to negotiate a collective employment agreement, Council of Trade Unions secretary Carol Beaumont said today.

TSB workers have been without a collective agreement since they were locked out in 1991 – and only allowed back in if they signed individual employment contracts.

“Bank customers, community members and trade unionists from the Taranaki area will meet tonight to back up members of the bank workers’ union, Finsec, on the eve of their pay talks,” said Carol Beaumont, who is to speak at the meeting.

She said it was a positive move for the bank to agree to collective bargaining.

“The union movement expects that TSB management will put the divisive employment relationships of the 1990s behind it, and work with the union to develop a high-trust, constructive working environment,” she said.
