Moving A Metal Mountain...
Moving Macaulay's Metal Mountain
Starting at 11 am this morning [18 November 2003], Macaulay Metals in a twenty four hour, seven day operation will be delivering their metal 'mountain' to the Port of Wellington for shipment to a steel mill in Korea. With the arrival of the ship 'Island Bulker' at the port of Wellington the process of moving the metal mountain has begun.
"The catchment area for the steel scrap that we receive at our Seaview facility is the lower North Island from New Plymouth and Napier south, with some material arriving from across the Strait from Blenheim, Nelson and Picton", says Macaulay Metals Managing director, Jeff Harris.
"Our supply comes from demolition, factory off-cuts, other scrap metal dealers, landfills, farms even private homes . Every three to four months we go through the process of exporting our bulk steel scrap shipments to Asian steel mills."
Over the ensuing week five hundred truck and trailer loads will deliver the steel scrap to the port at a rate of 100 tonnes an hour in purpose built 20ft metal bins. The bins were loaded at Macaulay Metals modern metal facility in Seaview with three thirty tonne excavators continually eroding away the mountain of metal.
The steel scrap had been prepared to international specifications using large Excavator mounted shears or manual gas cutting. Macaulay Metals operation involves 23 staff in the preparation of a wide range of Ferrous and Non Ferrous Metals for sale.
Owens Road Transport provided a fleet of seven truck and trailer units for this continuous 24 hour operation. At the port the ships cranes will winch the bins directly into the holds on the MV Amberwave.
Macaulay Metals was initially established in 1959 by Bill Macaulay and is a long established, respected scrap metal recycling business, purchasing all forms of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals from trusted industrial suppliers, other scrap metal dealers and members of the public, to meet demands of foundries and manufacturers both in New Zealand and overseas.
Since 1995 Jeff Harris and Bill's son Mark Macaulay have continued to run and grow the business. Macaulay Metals strongly supports the role of the scrap metal recycling industry in conserving energy and natural resources and reducing the toll on the environment.
