New Chief Executive Announced

New Chief Executive Announced

John Ryan has been appointed chief executive of the Building Industry Authority, chairman Barry Brown announced today.

“Mr Ryan comes to the BIA with a strong background in general management, strategic planning and change management in complex environments. He also has proven experience engaging with diverse stakeholder groups,” Mr Brown said.

“We believe his combination of private and public sector experience will be ideal in providing leadership to the BIA and industry.

“The organisation has faced some major challenges and undergone significant change in the last 12 months. There are more of both ahead when the Building Bill, currently, before Parliament, is passed,” Mr Brown said.

“The BIA has worked very hard in the last year in realigning the organisation, building our technical capacity and engaging proactively with industry stakeholders and with consumers,” he said.

“Mr Ryan’s background compliments the realignment and refocusing. We look forward to the contribution he will make to the organisation and the industry.”

In recent years Mr Ryan has worked as a consultant, leading the implementation of complex operational and change management projects. These have included a performance-based research fund for the Tertiary Education Commission, several re-engineering projects for the Public Prisons Service and restructuring of the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

Previously Mr Ryan held senior management positions in the energy sector, most recently as general manager services for Solid Energy. He began his career in chartered accounting.

Mr Ryan takes over from BIA acting chief executive Richard Martin on November 10, 2003.

“Richard Martin has made a considerable contribution to the BIA and industry since he took up the role in an acting capacity in March this year,” Mr Brown said.

“He has overseen major structural change within the organisation and significant progress has been made on several major issues during his time in the role.”
