Tariff Review Decision “Pragmatism At Work”

Tariff Review Decision “Pragmatism At Work”

Easing tariff barriers over an extended timeframe to 2009 will allow businesses to make the required adjustments in an efficient way.

“The timeline of removing tariff barriers announced by Government is a responsible move by Government that is basically what business lobbied for” said Michael Barnett, Auckland Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive.

“Business supports the principle of removing tariff barriers as in the interests of promoting a free trade global marketplace,” said Mr Barnett. “However we are pleased the Government has actioned this principle in a way that takes pragmatic account of the business community’s need to adjust.”

“The tariff removal package appears balanced, and will send the right signals both to business to stay in New Zealand and build exports, as well as to our trading partners to join the party of a free trade world,” concluded Mr Barnett.
