Public Sector Innovation Showcased In 2003 Awards

Wellington, New Zealand, September 23, 2003 — A monolingual Maori dictionary, a classroom kit to help keep kids safe on the Internet and a hotline for Work and Income clients are just a few of the projects shortlisted for the 2003 BearingPoint Innovation Awards.

The awards have been running for five years and are sponsored jointly by BearingPoint, one of the world’s largest business consulting and systems integration firms, and the Institute of Public Administration New Zealand, a non-profit organisation committed to promoting the highest professional standards in and the fullest understanding of policy development and public sector management.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony in Wellington on October 14.

The awards are open to public sector organisations that can demonstrate innovation in their work, and aim to celebrate world-class government management and organisational excellence.

Prizes are awarded for innovation in local government, central government and the state sector, in the use of technology, in services to Maori and in management. One organisation will take away the Supreme Award. The Supreme Winner is eligible to compete in the international CAPAM innovation awards (Commonwealth Association of Public Administration and Management).

Past category winners have included Christchurch City Council, New Plymouth District Council, New Zealand Police and the Ministry of Commerce. Last year’s Supreme Award went to Auckland Regional Council for its “Virtually Thr” initiative which enables users to get information on public transport via their mobile phones.

BearingPoint Senior Manager Anne Cheetham said it was important that public sector organisations continued to innovate because there was so much at stake – from staff development to business success.

“The sector is not only a major employer in its own right, with 268,000 people working in public service, but its systems, services and processes support the lives of all New Zealanders. At the same time, it is an extremely complicated sector with multiple interdependencies.

“Public sector efficiencies and innovation should aim to make all our lives easier, break through bureaucratic barriers and ensure tax dollars are spent to best effect.”

Ms Cheetham said that celebrating public sector achievements in innovation helped to highlight best practice and ensure information was shared across the whole sector so all organisations gained from each other’s learning.

The standard of public sector innovation within New Zealand was generally very high, she said.
