Hospitality Standards Institute New CEO

New Chief Executive At The Hospitality Standards Institute

The chairman of the Hospitality Standards Institute (HSI), Mr Michael Friend says he is pleased to announce the appointment of a new chief executive for the HSI, Mr Steve Hanrahan.

The HSI is the industry-training organisation for the hospitality industry, developing qualifications and setting standards in consultation with the industry, and taking a leadership role in helping the industry identify and plan for their future skill requirements.

Mr Hanrahan has been with the HSI for the last 5 years, most recently as national operations manager, where he had responsibility for trainee growth and quality assurance. His tenure in this role saw a huge organisational growth phase, from 1,800 trainees a year in hospitality in 2000 to over 4,500 trainees projected for this year.

Steve Hanrahan’s work experience before the HSI includes various management roles in some of New Zealand’s top hotels and restaurants. He is also a graduate of the three year Diploma in Hotel and Catering Administration.

Mr Hanrahan says it is exciting to be leading the HSI at a time when the growth in the Hospitality industry is prolific, in keeping with a strong domestic economy and a growing tourism industry. He says the supply of skilled and trained employees is critical to the success and future growth of the hospitality industry.

He says he looks forward to working with all the stakeholders in the hospitality industry, including employers, training providers, industry associations, trainees, and central and local government to provide skilled staff to meet the needs of a dynamic and growing market.

Michael Friend concluded that Steve Hanrahan’s strong performance in his previous roles, where he built excellent relationships with training providers and employers, bodes well for the future success of the HSI in meeting the needs of employers in Hospitality.
