Bryce Johns Appointed Editor Of Waikato Times
Dominion Post Sports Editor Bryce Johns has been appointed Editor of the Waikato Times, Fairfax NZ Chief Operating
Officer Peter O’Hara announced today.
Mr Johns, 35, succeeds Venetia Sherson, who retires from the editorship today after six years in the position.
Mr O’Hara said Mr Johns is a talented manager and journalist with outstanding personal qualities. He has successfully
led the development of a new department during the merger of the Dominion and Evening Post.
“This is an important appointment in the group. The Waikato Times is the leading regional newspaper in New Zealand, has
proud journalistic traditions, and has a future of strong growth in an expanding region.
“It is critical to Fairfax New Zealand that the newspaper is led strongly and meets the needs of its community. We know
Bryce Johns will be dedicated to leading the Waikato Times with the highest standards and will serve the Waikato
community diligently.”
Formerly sports editor of the Evening Post in Wellington, Mr Johns has also worked in general reporting and sub-editing
roles, including four years as chief reporter for the Northern Advocate in Whangarei.
He was also deputy chief reporter at the Evening Post and filled acting chief reporter and news editor roles at that
newspaper.
Mr Johns began his career at the Wanganui Chronicle where he worked as a sub-editor, general reporter and sports
reporter.
He is an accomplished sportsman, and has played soccer at Northern and Central League level for more than 15 years.
Mr Johns said he was excited by the challenge. “The Waikato is booming and my role is to ensure the newspaper grows with
it. The Waikato Times has excellent employees and that will assist our task.”
He will commence his duties in Hamilton in six weeks.
