Finalists in 14th REINZ Property Journalism Awards

NEWS RELEASE 01 SEPTEMBER 2003

REINZ Announces Finalists in 14th Property Journalism Awards

A record twenty-six finalists have been announced in the fourteenth annual REINZ Property Journalism Awards.

This year’s awards have seen an upsurge in entries from Internet-based media, as well as entries from lifestyle magazines and television media, with a total of 263 entries received from 32 journalists nationwide.

Real Estate Institute National President, Mr. Graeme Woodley said that this year's record number of entries was very gratifying for the Institute and proved the significance of the Awards.

“The amount of entries received is an illustration of the increasing value the public places on being informed about property and real estate in this country. Journalists have responded to this demand by producing increasingly complex pieces of high quality work.”

The award categories are: Best Property Portfolio, Best Single Item for Residential, Commercial and Rural Property, Best Provincial Property Portfolio and Best Lifestyle Portfolio.

The winners will be announced on Tuesday, 16 September at an Awards function in Wellington.

This year’s judge for the Journalism Awards is one of this country’s leading business journalists, Terry Hall. Mr. Hall was a New Zealand correspondent for The Financial Times in London for 20 years, is a former business editor of The Dominion Post, a former New Zealand correspondent for Bloomberg and the former editor of Reuters Economic Services.

Mr. Hall said: “For several years now I have noticed a significant improvement in the quality of writing, complexity of articles tackled and the willingness to write attractive, yet colourful pieces of work. This proves the subject of property is not only far from boring, but of considerable reader interest.”

The winner of the Best Property Portfolio receives $2000 plus the President’s Trophy, and the five other category winners receive $500.
