New fares to Norfolk
The cost of flying to Norfolk Island has plummeted following Air New Zealand's announcement of its new trans-Tasman airfare structure.
And with the new "smart saver" fares there is no add-on charge for Norfolk passengers connecting to Auckland from Wellington or Christchurch.
Air New Zealand's new Tasman Express fare is $169 from all three centres. Fares do not include taxes.
Norfolk Island Tourism general manager Bruce Walker says the saving for an Auckland-based passenger is about 66 per cent on a one-way fare and about 50 per cent on a return fare .
"But the big news is the dropping of add-on fares from Wellington and Christchurch," Mr Walker says. "Even adding two one-way fares together the savings are substantial.
"For example, if you fly from Christchurch to Auckland to Norfolk and return, the fare is only $338 compared to $821 previously. That's a saving of nearly 60 per cent."
Air New Zealand announced at least a quarter of all seats available, on average, will be at the lowest "smart saver" fare range.
"But with loadings to Norfolk over the last few years averaging in the 56 per cent range, I reckon up to 40 per cent of seats could be available at the new rate," Mr Walker says.
On average 6,300 New Zealanders visit Norfolk Island every year but Mr Walker says he expects this to increase when new fares come into force in October.
"It's the sort of fare structure that will appeal to people who love visiting Norfolk Island for its pristine scenery, rich history, great golf courses and leisurely lifestyle," he says.
"Now, all New Zealanders have the opportunity to fly to Norfolk Island all year round at a much better price."
