Kapiti Police Station Scoops Building Ind Awards
Kapiti Police Station Scoops Building Industry
Award
Arrow International’s project management of the new Kapiti Police Station has won the company a national building award.
Arrow won the Ready Mixed Concrete under $2m category at the New Zealand Institute of Building / James Hardie Awards for Excellence in the Building Professions 2003. The awards were announced at a dinner held at the Carlton Hotel, Auckland on Friday 18 July.
Arrow International was appointed in December 2001 to manage the design and construction of the new station. The building and interior fit-out was designed by Opus International Consultants.
The original Kapiti (formerly Paraparaumu) Police Station was built in 1970. Since 1974 the station has been progressively extended to service the rapidly growing Kapiti district. This included various prefab extensions to the original station that resulted in an extremely compromised facility that was cramped, inefficient and dysfunctional.
The $2 million station opened by Police Minister George Hawkins in February 2003 was completed two weeks ahead of a tight programme with cost savings of $300,000. Through careful management of the financial aspects of the project, Arrow was able to include $80,000 of additional features within the originally approved budget.
The 850m2 Kapiti Police Station included the two stage transformation of a green field area directly adjacent to the existing station into a modern, state of the art station which houses a staff of 45 together with cells, interview rooms, watch house and associated facilities.
All of this work had to be completed while existing station operations continued without interruption 24 hours and 7 days a week.
“The success of the project relied on a full understanding of NZ Police’s special requirements, during a thorough consultation process” says Project Director Simon Shaw. “Project Manager Jonathan Leach and Construction Manager Tony Doile’s passion for the project and their understanding of Police needs were significant factors in the successful delivery of the new station”.
This is the second time Arrow has won this category. In 2002 Arrow won the under $2 million award for the Waitaha Learning Centre in Christchurch for the Ministry of Education.
Arrow dominated this year’s Awards with another win in the $2m - $10m category for Cadbury World Dunedin.
Arrow International Ltd was established in 1984 and is the country’s largest project and construction management company with seven branches in New Zealand and Australia and over 150 employees.
