New strategy will aid innovation, growth

New strategy will aid innovation, growth - Business NZ

The Hazardous Substances Strategy released today has been welcomed by Business NZ.

Chief Executive Simon Carlaw says businesses using new materials and processes had found the Hazardous Substances & New Organisms Act was holding back their ability to innovate and grow.

"The Strategy heralds a move to develop a faster pathway for approvals in low risk areas, to reduce information provision costs, and to make the approval process more transparent.

"The proposal to give the Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) more ability to streamline and simplify the HSNO process is also worthwhile.

"Overall, the Strategy could significantly reduce compliance costs while improving compliance with the HSNO regime," Mr Carlaw said.

Business NZ was a member of the working group that developed the plan for change.
