National Export Symposium Countdown

Auckland, May 20, 2003: New Zealand’s premier export event will showcase successful services and intellectual property exporting - two areas that Trade New Zealand says are among the most promising future growth areas for the nation’s exports.

The Trade New Zealand National Export Symposium will be held at the Christchurch Convention Centre on Thursday 12 June and followed by the annual Trade New Zealand Export Awards 2003, which will announce Trade New Zealand’s Supreme Exporter of the Year.

Trade New Zealand says the one-day symposium, which aims to give exporters practical solutions to help grow their international business, has had a positive response from businesses who recognise exporting is becoming a necessity for business success.

Amongst the sessions grabbing attention are an Export New Zealand-chaired panel discussion on Exporting Services: The Inherent Challenges, and Exporting Intellectual Property, a session with speakers from specialty frozen food exporter Aria Farm and lawyer Susan Kingston. Both these areas showcase the practice of adding value and human capital to commodities in order to lift the country’s future export performance.

Trade New Zealand’s Rod MacKenzie says the conference is an opportunity for exporters to brainstorm, listen to advice from people who have already overcome international barriers, stimulate new ideas and showcase new ‘smart’ business practices.

“This year, the Export Symposium will provide insights and advice critical to our export future. As well as covering topics such as exporting services and how intellectual property rights can open up new export opportunities, the Symposium will include market intelligence on the significant and complex power of China; an economic outlook and financing options for exporters; trends in the US ICT marketplace and international branding.”.

Guest speakers include:

Simon Anholt, a leading international consultant to corporations and governments wanting to build global brands, will show how to turn the forces of globalisation to advantage and how global markets can favor the smaller smarter player; Andrew Lark, Vice President, Global Communications and Marketing at Sun Microsystems in the US who will cover global technology trends and strategies for market access to the US; Gavin Faull, President of Swiss-Belhotel in Hong Kong and director of the Pacific International Hotel Management School in New Plymouth which is a leading New Zealand exporter of services to hotel chains throughout Asia; Don MacLean, New Zealand Trade Commissioner to Guangzhou, Trade New Zealand’s chief representative in Southern China. Dr Clint Laurent, director and CEO of Asian Demographics and New Zealand’s foremost authority on demographic change in China and emerging opportunities for trade in the regions.

Minister for Trade Negotiations Jim Sutton will open the Symposium.

The Trade New Zealand National Export Symposium and Export Awards are the premier events on the New Zealand export calendar and expect to attract several hundred delegates from around the country.
